Epic Games Shutters Paragon And Offers Refunds To Focus Hugely Successful Fortnite

You could see this coming from a mile away, but development studio Epic Games has decided to pull the plug on Paragon, its moderately successful multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) title and focus on Fortite, its hugely successful battle royale game. To soften the blow, Epic Games said it will be issuing full refunds to every player who ever purchased Paragaon on any platform, they just have to request it.

"It’s with heavy hearts we’ve decided to close down Paragon. We truly appreciate everything you’ve put into Paragon. We received many passionate ideas for where to take the game; the outpouring of thoughtful suggestions is another testament to this incredible community," Epic Games said in a statement.

Paragon launched in March 2016 as an Early Access title and was later offered up as a free-to-play beta. The expectation was that it would rise in ranks to rival League of Legends and DOTA 2 in the free-to-play MOBA arena. Maybe it would have, but the unexpected success of Fortnite, its other free-to-play game, prompted Epic Games to pull some developers from the Paragon team and reassign them to Fortnite.

With only so much talent to go around, Epic Games had a big decision—continue to develop Paragon with a skeleton crew, or go whole hog on Fortnite and give PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds some healthy competition. It chose the latter.

"After careful consideration, and many difficult internal debates, we feel there isn’t a clear path for us to grow Paragon into a MOBA that retains enough players to be sustainable. We didn’t execute well enough to deliver on the promise of Paragon. We have failed you—despite the team’s incredibly hard work—and we’re sorry," Epic Games said.
