GE ’Sol’ Alexa-Powered AI Smart Lamp Lights Up In September For $200
GE and Amazon are hoping to light up your life. The two companies just released more information about their Alexa-powered smart lamp, including a new name, release date, and price tag.
Jeff Patton, General Manager of Connected Home Products for GE Lighting, remarked at the product's announcement six months ago that, “It’s really about simplifying and extending an experience for consumers, allowing them to add smart capabilities throughout the home through a really simple form factor Consumers don’t need a cell phone, a special switch or a hub. They just need their voice.”
The unique lamp, originally referred to as C by GE, has been renamed C by GE Sol. The new name reflects the lamp’s unique circular design. It has also been revealed that the lamp will be available in September for $200. This price tag is rather contrary to GE’s original plan to price the lamp lower than an Amazon Echo smart speaker at $180. If customers pre-order the lamp, however, they will get the lamp for $160.
The lamp’s biggest selling point is its integration of Amazon Alexa and its ability to access Alexa’s database of more than 10,000 skills. Users will also be able to use Alexa to adjust the lamp’s light and function. Users will be able to dim or brighten the light, switch between yellow-white and bluish-white tones, and pair visual light cues with various tasks.
GE is also adding voice compatibility to its C by GE LED light bulbs. The connected bulbs will be available this summer and will be compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple Homekit. A C-Reach hub allows users to control both individual and groups of bulbs with their voice or a smartphone app. The light bulbs have also been designed to produce day and night time appropriate light.
