Incredible Galaxy S6 Edge Demand Forces Samsung To Tap Third Factory For Curved Screen Production

Surging demand for Samsung's new Galaxy S6 Edge has led the company to ramp up production of their new curved screen smartphone, with the early opening of their A3 production line. Though originally set to come online in June, the A3 plant — the third that the company now has in place for making OLED displays — will help Samsung to increase production of the Galaxy S6 Edge by 150%, from the current 2 million to 5 million units produced monthly.

Since its worldwide release on April 10th, the demand for Samsung's latest iterations of its flagship smartphone has exceeded even the heady pre-release predictions made by the company. The company's new offering is available in two configurations, the curved display Galaxy S6 Edge and the more traditional flat display Galaxy S6, and prior to release the smartphone punditry generally thought that the more shapely S6 Edge would account for roughly 25% of overall S6 sales.

Along with being praised for its spec sheet and build quality, the Galaxy S6 Edge has been universally lauded for its sharp and innovative design, however its retail cost is significantly higher than that of its flat screen sibling and offers very little in the way of additional functionality. Demonstrating, though, that one should never underestimate the selling power of the novel when it comes to today's high-tech smartphonery, the remarkable demand for the Galaxy S6 Edge now has many of the same pundits who originally forecast a 3:1 sales ratio in favor of the flat Galaxy S6 dramatically revising their predictions, even going so far as to say that they expect the S6 Edge to outsell the S6 in 2015 once all of the figures are in.

Samsung fell into a tie with Apple as the global leader in smartphone production in last year due at least in part to increased market inroads by Chinese vendors such as Lenovo and Huawei. The company, though, hopes to regain sole possession of that lofty perch with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, forecasting sales of over 70 million units according to an unidentified company executive. Samsung has not released any official target sales figures for its S6 phone line.
