Motorola Adds WiMAX Access Point 850

In addition to the 4G LTE USB WWAN Modem Motorola announced today, the company is also helping WiMAX operators build out their networks with the new WiMAX Access Point (WAP) 850. The WAP 850 enables WiMAX operators to build fewer WiMAX sites with higher capacity. The base station is built with the future in mind by providing a migration path to 802.16m WiMAX or Long Term Evolution. The WAP 850 uses Intelligent Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) scheduler software. When used in combination with Motorola's high capacity baseband hardware, it can support up to 40% more subscribers than other solutions.

Motorola Solutions Introduces Most Cost-Effective, Clear Path to 4G With WiMAX Access Point 850

New WAP 850 protects operators' current mobile broadband network investments while future proofing migration to 802.16m and LTE

CHICAGO, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- 4G World -- Addressing the needs of WiMAX operators looking to evolve their networks to support richer mobile data, the Motorola Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today at 4G World 2010 announced the WiMAX Access Point (WAP) 850 to help WiMAX operators cost-effectively deliver 4G services such as video calling and voice over IP (VoIP) services to subscribers.

KEY FACTS

  • Motorola's newest WiMAX Access Point (WAP) 850 base station allows operators to build fewer WiMAX sites with higher capacity, enabling them to support broadband networks today with a clear, future-proof migration path to 802.16m WiMAX or Long Term Evolution (LTE).
  • The WAP 850 is designed with proprietary Intelligent Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) scheduler software. When coupled with Motorola's high capacity baseband hardware, it can result in up to 40% more subscribers than even a 4X8 base station, translating to significantly low total cost of ownership.
  • With lower equipment and operating costs, operators will be able to pass the savings on to consumers, offering them higher broadband speed rates at an affordable price.
  • WAP 850 is the First 100% Reusable WiMAX base station for LTE or LTE-Advanced.

SUPPORTING QUOTE

Fred Gabbard, vice president, Product Management, Motorola Solutions

"Today's mobile subscribers are conditioned to expect speedy data and voice access, and therefore demand increasingly higher broadband rates at lower prices. For a WiMAX operator, this translates into an urgent need to create a solid roadmap supporting greater network capacity. Motorola's WiMAX WAP 850 offers operators a clear path toward building a 4G network by expanding WiMAX services while incrementally upgrading to 802.16m or LTE. In practice, this helps protect current network investments, while ensuring appropriate technology is in place to support future data rates."
