OnePlus 5 Goes Out Of Stock, Immediately Sparking OnePlus 5T Rumors
OnePlus has completely sold out of its Oneplus 5 handsets. A visit to the company's website shows that the OnePlus 5 is "out of stock," including both the model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage ($479), and the more expensive SKU with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage ($539). There is no mention of when or even if more stock will be available, leading some to believe that a OnePlus 5T or OnePlus 6 is right around the corner.
The OnePlus 5 has only been out for a few months, having launched earlier this year in June. Supply has often been an issue with OnePlus and its handsets, though usually the shortage of hardware is when a new device is first released. In this case, it is possible that OnePlus is readying a new phone, though if that is the case it will be interesting to see what hardware upgrades are introduced.
Qualcomm has not released another flagship processor to supplant its Snapdragon 835 found inside the OnePlus 5. That creates a bit of a different situation compared to the OnePlus 3T, which debuted in November 2016 with a Snapdragon 821 SoC. It replaced the OnePlus 3, which launched in June 2016 with a Snapdragon 820 Soc onboard. Unless Qualcomm is simultaneously readying a newer Snapdragon SoC, it does not make a whole lot of sense for OnePlus to a new handset.
The other possible scenario is that OnePlus simply ran out of inventory and is working on getting more devices in. Over in the UK, the OnePlus 5 is still available at O2, where the OnePlus 5 is sold exclusively in the UK. It shows inventory for both the Slate Grey model with 8GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and the Midnight Black model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with "free next working day delivery" for orders placed by midnight.
