AMD Radeon VII Review: Performance Benchmarks With 7nm Vega

Monolith’s surprisingly fun Orc-slaying title Middle Earth: Shadow of War, delivers a ton of visual fidelity even at its lower quality settings. So, to maximize the eye-candy on these high-end graphics cards, we used the game’s Ultra quality preset and ran the benchmark routine at a couple of resolutions, topping out at 4K -- or, excuse us, 3840x2160 for the sticklers out there. All of the game's graphics-related options were enabled, along with Temporal AA and Camera Blur. AMD's new Radeon VII outran the GeForce RTX 2070 at both resolutions in the Shadow Of War benchmark, but couldn't quite catch the GeForce RTX 2080. The Radeon VII trailed the RTX 2080 by 7 frames per second at 1440p, but that lead drops to only 3 FPS at 4K.

Shadow Of War's render time data provides some more insight into the average framerates above. As you can see, the GeForce RTX 2080 renders frames the quickest, which pushes its average scores to the head of the pack.

Things did not look good for the Radeon VII at 1440P in this game, as it fell victim to the RTX 2070 and 2080 and hung alongside the GeForce GTX 1080 and RTX 2060. With the resolution cranked to 4K, however, which places much more demand on the memory subsystem of each graphics card tested, the Radeon VII jumps up a few notches and trails only the GeForce RTX 2080.

The frame time data here obviously mirrors what we saw in terms of average framerates in this game. Let's move on to raid some tombs...
