ASUS Strix Radeon R9 Fury And The State Of DirectX 12 Performance

Hitman and Rise of The Tomb Raider Benchmarks

The latest outing of gun-for-hire Agent 47 is the first title in the series to feature support for DirectX 12. It serves as short prequel to 2012's Hitman Absolution and a sequel for the series set in various locales across Central Europe.

We tested Hitman running both DX11 and DX12 under the game's Ultra Preset using FXAA and 16x Anisotropic Filtering.

It's more of the same here in terms of the performance hierarchy. The Fury finishes ahead of the other two cards we tested and performance gets a slight bump as we switch from DX11 to DX12.

Rise of The Tomb Raider
DirectX 11 & 12 Gaming Performance
Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel for the 2013 reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. This latest adventure offers a more open-world setting and runs on a new engine. Crystal Dynamics worked closely with both AMD and NVIDIA to balance performance of both the PureHair rendering tech on cards from both camps.

Tomb Raider behaved somewhat differently than the previous titles. Here, we see performance suffering once we migrate to DX12. The new API is a finicky mistress and it will be up to developers to determine how best to take advantage of all the available resources in a system with their respective game titles. With some work, Tomb Raider may show performance benefits with DirectX 12, but it didn't in our testing.
