HP Omen 15 Gaming Notebook Review, A Bit Of Mojo And Voodoo

Performance: PCMark and 3DMark

Of the gaming notebooks we’ve recently tested, the Lenovo Y70 Touch is the closest competitor to the HP Omen 15. Sure, Y70 has a 17-inch display, but both systems field an Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 860m graphics. They’re also both designed to be extremely slim and light (for their respective display sizes) and they’re fairly close in price, as configured.

We also compare the HP Omen 15 to some bulkier gaming laptops to see how it fares against systems that sacrifice size and weight in favor of high-performance components.

Simulated Application Performance

HP markets the HP Omen 15 as a gaming laptop and it’s clearly designed to be used mostly for gaming. But there’s no reason the Omen has to be all play and no work, so we kicked off our tests with PCMark 7. This benchmark puts the laptop through ordinary entertainment and office tasks for a bumper-to-bumper assessment.

PCMark 7 doesn’t weigh graphics nearly as heavily as the other tests, so other components (including the SSD) have a bigger impact on the result here than they do in other tests.

Interestingly, the HP Omen 15 really pounded PCMark 7, putting up an overall score of 6071. While it’s not hard to see it passing as a business laptop, it’s also clearly capable of more than gaming. Maybe you can sell your boss on needing those P keys for your Excel macros.

Simulated Application Performance

Futuremark designed 3DMark Fire Strike for desktop PCs, but today’s heavy-duty gaming laptops have the chops to take on the high-resolution textures, tessellation, and other components of the test.

Here we see the systems with more powerful GPUs (in the form of GTX 880Ms and GTX980Ms) breaking away. Still, the Omen comes in with a solid score and squeezes past the Lenovo Y 70 Touch. Storage doesn't play much of a role in 3DMark the same way it does in PCMark, which also explains how these laptops spread to such a wide gap in in this test.
