Lenovo ThinkPad P70 Mobile Workstation Review: Xeon And Quadro On The Go

Cinebench and SiSoft SANDRA

Cinebench and SiSoft Sandra let us determine how well specific components and subsystems perform in a machine like the Lenovo ThinkPad P70. Cinebench offers CPU and GPU benchmark results for comparison, while Sandra offers several component-based tests.

Based on Maxon Cinema 4D software, this test uses a 3D scene and polygon and texture manipulation to assess GPU and CPU performance. The Main Processor Performance (CPU) test builds a still scene containing about 2,000 objects, for total polygon count above 300,000. Cinebench displays its results in points.

There are no surprised here—armed with a blazing fast Intel Xeon E3-1505M processor and NVIDIA Quadrom M4000M graphics,  the ThinkPad P70 posts very high marks in Cinebench, proving its up to the task of tackling workstation chores.

Synthetic General Performance Metrics

SiSoft SANDRA has a variety of tests that stress specific components or simulate certain tasks. We put the system through the CPU Arithmetic, Multimedia, Memory Bandwidth, and Physical Disks tests. SANDRA receives frequent updates, so if you use the benchmark, check to make sure you have the latest version.

Once again, no surprises here. The Xeon E3-1505M is a muscular quad-core CPU with Hyper Threading support, though it's the storage that steals the show. It's a Samsung 950 Pro NVMe SSD, one of those newfangled gum stick-sized drives that shuttles data through the PCIe bus. As such it's capable of delivering blistering fast data transfers—to the tune of 2.21GB/s in Sandra's read test.
