Google And Amazon Ease Frenemies Tension As YouTube TV Heads To Fire TV
This frenemies relationship is taking another positive turn today as the standalone YouTube TV app is now available for the Fire TV family of devices, which includes streaming sticks and boxes like the Fire TV Cube. Support will also be extended to Fire TV Edition televisions.
YouTube TV faces stiff competition to other streaming rivals like Sling TV and DirecTV Now, and Google didn't do itself any favors earlier this year when it raised prices from $35 to $40 per month back in March 2018. Google then raised priced again to $50 per month back in April.
With that said, YouTube TV includes over 70 channels (including network channels like ABC, NBC, and CBS) and support six accounts per household, with each account getting their own unlimited, siloed Cloud DVR storage. Right now, Amazon says that YouTube TV is supported on the following Fire TV hardware:
- Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen)
- Fire TV Stick 4K
- All-New Fire TV Cube,
- Fire TV Edition Smart TVs (Toshiba, Insignia, Element, and Westinghouse)
- Fire TV Cube (1st Gen)
- Fire TV (2nd Gen)
- Fire TV (3rd Gen)
The only Fire TV devices that are seemingly not getting any love from YouTube TV include the first-generation Fire TV Stick and the first-generation Fire TV.
