HP Omen X Emperium 65 Review: Massive 144Hz 4K G-SYNC Gaming

HP is hoping to offer gamers the best of both world with its Omen X Emperium 65. Although HP is careful not to call the Omen X Emperium 65 a television, per se, there's no escaping that fact that this is a massive display that would be more at home in your living room, den, or bonus room than your average computer desk.

The Omen X Emperium measures a massive 65 inches diagonally, which puts it squarely in big-screen 4K HDTV territory. However, it borrows technology from the gaming world that we don't see in typical consumer-grade televisions, like NVIDIA G-SYNC and support for 144Hz refresh rates, for example.

Unboxing Experience

Setting up the Omen X Emperium 65 is no doubt a two-man job due to its sheer size. The panel itself comes well packaged in an equally massive shipping container, along with beefy legs that are screwed into either side of the display. Also included in the box is a large soundbar (which slots in neatly between the two legs of the TV), a barebones NVIDIA SHIELD TV remote (we'll talk more about that later), power cords for both the TV and soundbar, an HDMI cable, DisplayPort cable, and a 3.5mm audio cable for connecting the soundbar to your gaming rig.

Since we didn't have a TV stand big enough to handle the considerable girth of the Omen X Emperium 65, we managed to shoehorn the beast onto a work desk with just an inch on either side of the legs to spare. But once setup, the Omen X Emperium 65 looks much like any other large-screen TV that you might have mounted on a wall in your living room or bedroom. The front is unadorned saved for a sensor in the bottom right-hand corner for the remote and a centrally-mounted OMEN logo in the bottom bezel.

On the back things start to look a bit more "gaming centric" thanks to big red OMEN logo and a strip of LEDs that can be manually configured in practically any hue to your tastes, or can be randomly assigned at timed intervals from the OSD.

Inputs are plentiful. On the left-hand side of the display, you'll find a DisplayPort connector, two HDMI ports and an Ethernet jack. On the right-hand side, there are two USB-A ports along with the power switch and joystick controller to access the OSD to change display settings.

HP has included a nice added touch with the Omen X Emperium that we’d like to see on other large TVs/monitor. There is an LED light strip that runs alongside the primary ports on the left-hand side of the display. When you start to plug in a cable into a port, the strip lights up giving you a better look at what you’re doing. It’s a thoughtful detail that save's users the trouble of pulling out a flashlight (or using a flashlight app on our phone) when trying to plug in cables in tight, dark quarters.
