Word is out that Electronic Arts has closed down Maxis Emeryville, the studio responsible for the buggy SimCity remake and, more recently, The Sims 4. Guillaume Pierre, a designer and lead gameplay scripter for SimCity, first revealed the news on Twitter saying, "Well it was a fun 12 years, but it's time to turn off the lights and put the key under the door. RIP Maxis Emeryville." Subsequent tweets would clarify that yes, "the shop is closing down," followed by confirmation from EA once the news spread. The timing really couldn't have been worse, as EA dropped the bombshell right in the middle of the Game Developer Conference (GDC), an annual event where developers and game studios from around... Are games getting too complex? One person who thinks they are is Richard Hilleman, chief creative officer for Electronic Arts. Speaking at the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas recently, Hilleman lamented that games are "too hard to learn," pointing out that it can take several precious hours just to get in a groove with a basic title. "Our games are actually still too hard to learn. The average player probably spends two hours to learn how to play the most basic game," Hilleman said. "And asking for two hours of somebody's time--most of our customers, between their normal family lives...to find two contiguous hours to concentrate on learning how to play a video game is a big ask."He made the comments... Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made the wrong call at the end of Super Bowl XLIX and potentially cost his team from being crowned back-to-back champions, though it played out almost exactly as simulated in Madden NFL 15 on the Xbox One, which correctly predicted the final score and winning team a week prior to the big game -- 28-24 in favor of the New England Patriots. In doing so, Electronic Arts' Madden franchise improves its record to 9-3 in annual Super Bowl simulations. That's impressive in and of itself, though this is the first time in a dozen Super Bowls that EA's football simulation not only picked the correct team, but also the score. It's come close before, but has also been way... Read more...
Despite all the distractions over pigskin bladders this past week, the New England Patriots will be prepared for the staunch defense of the Seattle Seahawks and win Super Bowl XLIX, with quarterback Tom Brady earning the MVP award. So says Madden NFL 15 in an annual simulation that Electronic Arts has been doing for over a decade. It's worth bringing up that the annual Madden simulations have put together a record of 8-3 up to this point. Impressive, though not without some embarrassing misses, like predicting a Denver Broncos victory over the Seahawks last year to the tune of 31-28. Instead, things went bad for Manning and company from the very first snap, and it was the... Read more...
Absent of any real fanfare or even a simple press release, publisher Electronic Arts has launched its new SimCity BuildIt game for iOS and Android devices. The all-new SimCity game is a free-to-play mobile title "designed for gamers on the go." Taking advantage of the touchscreens that adorn smartphones and tablets, SimCity BuildIt supports gestures like pinch, zoom, and rotate. "Evolve your city in a variety of ways. Meet your citizens' needs to keep them happy, or make questionable choices and feel your citizens' wrath," Electronic Arts states. Though it's free to download and play, the game is also ready to serve up in-app purchases. A list of the top in-app purchases is filled with varying... Read more...
There's a new Sims title in town, and it's unlike any previous version you've played before. The Sims 4, now available on PC, lets you create Sims that have their own personalities, and just as in real life, they change over time depending on how you interact with them. According to Electronic Arts, these new Sims are smarter, more relatable, and emotionally aware. "Every Sim is unique in The Sims 4, your own individual creations that come to life with big personalities and endless possibilities," said Rachel Franklin, Executive Producer for The Sims 4. "Who they are on the inside changes the way you play. Your Sims embody the traits and aspirations you give them in The Sims 4, and playing out... Read more...
Looks like Electronic Arts is not holding back this year with its sports games. The video game publisher is expecting to make around $1 billion in revenue from downloadable content and is also taking steps to crack down on cheaters for its various sports titles. Madden NFL 15 is one of the key games to EA’s strategy. Aside from players paying $60 for the standard game, EA is pumping out a plethora of add-on content such as Ultimate Team players, jerseys, coaches, playbooks, and stadiums. The Madden Ultimate Team packs, which can be purchased with Madden Points, are a huge moneymaker for EA that comes with at least one gold or elite player, nine other players, and some. Analysts, such as... Read more...
Electronic Arts has been in a giving mood lately. After discontinuing support for The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection last month, the publisher decided to give the game away at no cost through its Origin digital distribution service. And through its On-The-House program, EA has temporarily removed the price tags from several games, such as Peggle and Battlefield 3. Now Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger is up for grabs. Like previous titles that appeared on EA's On-The-House program, this one can disappear at any time, so pounce quickly if you want relive those awful cut scenes that we thought were the cat's meow back in the day. Once you claim the game, it's yours to keep until the end of time... Read more...
Microsoft is digging deep in its bags of tricks to convince gamers that its Xbox One console is the better option versus Sony's PlayStation 4, the latter of which is maintaining a somewhat large sales lead. Following the launch of a Kinect-less console for a reduced $399 price tag, Microsoft has joined forces with Electronic Arts to offer a rather nifty gaming service. It's called EA Access and it runs $5 per month. Alternately, you can pay $30 for an annual membership and save 50 percent. Either way, you'll enjoy unlimited access to "The Vault," inside of which is a collection of four EA games. They include FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2, and Battlefield 4. That comes out to over $100 worth... Read more...
Good news, gamers! Electronic Arts has decided to donate The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection to anyone and everyone in need of a game to play. That's right -- the title is completely free, provided you claim your copy by July 31, 2014 at 10AM PDT. After that, the freebie promotion disappears, though it probably won't be the last time EA does something like this. So, that's the good news. And the bad? As you probably guessed, you have to claim and download the game through your Origin account. For some, that requirement is no big deal, but if you're turned off by EA's Origin service, this could be a deal killer. We suppose some of you might find that to be a string, but it's understandable that EA... Read more...
Electronic Arts is getting to release its fourth expansion pack for Battlefield 4. Called Dragon's Teeth, the upcoming DLC will thrust gamers into dense Asian Pacific cities for all-out urban warfare with four new maps, lots of potential for destruction, new weapons, and more. There's even a new Battle pickup -- the R.A.W.R., which is a heavily armed remotely operated ground vehicle. "Wreak havoc in a floating restaurant or drain the lake opening up for a frontal vehicle assault, all while the battle rages between the modern high rises of Sunken Dragon. Fight among the huge monuments of despots in the grey concrete Propaganda. Wage wars within the bustling alleyways and upon the rooftops of Pearl... Read more...
No, your PC can't run Crysis online, not after June 30, 2014, anyway. It doesn't matter how big and burly your setup is, playing Crysis online will no longer be an option after next month, as it's one of about a trillion and a half titles (small exaggeration) getting booted offline this summer and beyond. The list of games starts with Lord of Ultima, the only title scheduled to be shut down today. On October 1, 2014, Electronic Arts will kick World Series of YAHTZEE (free for iOS) offline. Sandwiched in between those two titles are a whole bunch of popular games, all scheduled to go dark on June 30, EA announced in a blog post today. "The decisions to retire older EA games are never easy. The... Read more...
Who would have thought that a cable box might provide the biggest competition yet to dedicated consoles like Microsoft's Xbox One, Sony's PlayStation 4, and Nintendo's Wii U systems? As unlikely as that might sound, Comcast is reportedly close to striking a deal with Electronic Arts that would allow customers to purchase and play games through its cloud-based X1 cable box. News of the impending deal comes from Reuters and its "five sources briefed on the plans." The sources say Comcast and EA have been testing the service for the past two years and are now close to inking a deal to stream games like FIFA and Madden. The games would be available on X1, an advanced cable box with a video operating... Read more...
PC and Xbox gamers have been anxiously awaiting the release of Titanfall since it was unveiled last June, and that wait has finally come to an end. Publisher Electronic Arts (EA) and developer Respawn Entertainment released Titanfall to retail stores across North America today, which is notable for a few reasons. The first is that it's an exclusive title to Xbox One consoles and Windows PCs, with a launch to Xbox 360 planned for March 25. This is one of those titles Microsoft hopes will help prop up and promote its Xbox One system, which currently trails Sony's PlayStation 4 in units shipped. Titanfall is also notable because it's strictly an online-only multiplayer game, which adds another exclusive... Read more...
It didn't seen to faze Electronic Arts that it was voted by Consumerist readers the "Worst Company in America" for two years in a row, so why be feign surprise that EA is apparently more than willing to piss gamers off with its mobile reboot of Dungeon Keeper? Most of the professionally written reviews on the web hammer the title for falling into the mobile trap of being a blatant money sucking incubus, and though there are a number of positive user reviews on Google Play, those have come under fire. When the game asks for your feedback, you have two choices -- give it a "1-4 Star" rating or a "5 Star" review. If you choose the latter, you're transported to the app store where you can leave your... Read more...
Good news if you're a Denver Broncos fan. Every year Electronics Arts runs a simulation of the Super Bowl on its Madden game, and this year, Madden NFL 25 predicted the Broncos will defeat the Seattle Seahawks in overtime by a field goal, 31-28. If the Broncos do in fact win, Peyton Manning will become the first quarterback ever to lead two different franchises to Super Bowl victories. Before you scoff at the simulated results, it's worth noting that the Madden NFL series has correctly picked the Super Bowl winner in 8 of the last 10 contests, including last year when it predicted the Baltimore Ravens getting off to a big lead and then holding on for the win despite a valiant comeback attempt... Video game publisher Electronic Arts (EA) posted a $308 million net loss during its fiscal third-quarter ended December 31, 2013. EA called it a "transitional quarter," referring to the fact that both Sony and Microsoft launched next-generation consoles in November. As a result, gamers tempered their spending on software titles for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The good news for EA is that it seems to be on solid footing going forward. EA was the top publisher on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, led by Battlefield 4, Madden NFL 25, FIFA 14, and Need for Speed Rivals. And for the month of December, FIFA 14 and BF4 were the two of the top three best-selling titles across all platforms in... Read more...
As one of the most anticipated games of the year, Battlefield 4 also has the distinction of being one of the most buggy releases, and that's regardless of platform. Even worse, Electronic Arts and DICE can't seem to catch a break. To wit, there's a new patch available for the PC version, and the main reason it exists is to fix a bunch of issues introduced in a previous update. Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back! Those of you wielding multiple graphics cards will be happy to know that the latest patch issues a fix for terrain flickering when running BF4 on a SLI or CrossFire configured system. Applying the patch is also supposed to resolve "three of the top crash issues on the... Read more...
The suits on Wall Street took notice of rumors that Electronic Arts had put a freeze on DICE from working on future projects such as Star Wars: Battlefront and a new Mirror's Edge title due to ongoing problems with Battlefield 4. EA shares dipped more than 8 percent as reports of halted production pranced through cyberspace. In a statement to Polygon, an EA spokesperson earlier this week acknowledged that there's much work to be done to fix Battlefield 4's persistent problems. "The team at DICE is working non-stop to update the game. Since Battlefield 4 China Rising expansion pack was already in the final states of development by the time issues began with Battlefield 4, we decided to fulfill... Read more...
Good news, soccer fans -- you can practice your "Gooooooooooaaaaal!" celebration because FIFA 14 from Electronic Arts is now available for iOS and Android devices. Even better, it's a free download, though if you're insistent on lighting the load in your wallet, you can make in-app purchases for FIFA points. One thing to keep in mind is that you'll need at least 1.35GB of free space available, so check your storage beforehand and make any necessary adjustments. Once installed, you'll have access to 33 leagues, over 600 licensed teams, and more than 16,000 players. "From the English Premier League and La Liga to the German Bundesliga and beyond. March toward glory in 34 authentic stadiums. Plus,... Read more...
If you've ever been to Disneyland or Disney World (or any of the five theme parks around the world, then you've seen at least a glimpse of Tomorrowland. Maybe you thought to yourself, "That's not how I envision the future." Well, what does your version of the future look like? One way you can show it is with the upcoming SimCity Cities of Tomorrow expansion pack. The first DLC for SimCity will be available on November 12, 2013. If you decide to snag it, you'll be able to take your current cities that you've already worked so hard on and transform them in into futuristic looking buildings and roads. "But what will cities look like 50 years from now? Better yet – how will they be constructed?... Read more...
The modern version of SimCity just can't seem to enjoy a smooth launch. When it was released to Windows PCs back in March, users complained about the lack of offline play and problems connecting to overburdened servers. Now several months later, SimCity launches to the Mac platform, and once again, gamers are having trouble. Several posts on EA's forums detail issues gamers are having getting the game to run properly. The complaints aren't limited to a single system, either, but a range of Macs, including brand new Retina MacBook models. One user complained of having to reinstall Origin five times just to try and attempt to run SimCity (unsuccessfully), while another said the game was "totally... Read more...
